BioMat Pro Review: Heat, Size, and Who It Suits

HeatBy Kove Longevity

A close look at the BioMat Pro: what the amethyst and tourmaline layer does, what a session is like, how often to use it, what its FDA 510(k) clearance means, how it compares with the BioMat Mini and our PEMF mats, and who should choose something else.

Close-up of the amethyst and tourmaline channels in the BioMat Pro

The BioMat Pro is a full-length heated mat with 19 lb of natural amethyst and black tourmaline, half and half, between the heating element and you. You lie on it, choose one of four heat levels, and the stone turns electric heat into far infrared, a gentle radiant warmth. It is FDA 510(k) cleared, Class II. This review covers how it works, what a session is like, how often to use it, what the clearance means, how it compares with our other mats, and who should choose something else.

How the BioMat Pro works

The mat is built in layers: a heating element at the bottom, a bed of crushed amethyst and black tourmaline above it, and the cover you lie on. The element never touches you. It warms the stone, and stone spreads heat more evenly than wire, so the surface warms without hot spots. As the stone warms, it gives that heat off as far infrared in the 6 to 12 micron range, which is the warmth the mat puts out.

The tourmaline releases negative ions while the mat is on, and the Pro has a no-heat setting that runs it for negative ions only. That is a description of what is inside the mat; we make no health claims for the crystals. The stone is the heat medium, and 19 lb of it is why the Pro holds an even temperature and lies flat. Our guide to infrared mats explained covers amethyst, tourmaline, and how a mat differs from a heating pad.

Setup and what a session is like

There is nothing to assemble. Lay the mat flat on a firm surface, such as a bed, the floor, or a treatment table, and connect the controller. Switch it on about 30 minutes ahead so the stone warms through, then lie down clothed, set the level, and set the timer.

A session is quiet and passive. The warmth builds under you while your head stays in room air, so you can read or rest. When the timer ends, you get up, with no shower or change of clothes. The germanium waterproof cover, included with the Pro ($200 value), goes over the mat for easy care.

How often to use it

The guidance is simple: start on a low level and build up over a few sessions, plan on about 20 to 60 minutes, and use it daily or as part of a recovery routine. A session you repeat is worth more than a long one you skip.

What the FDA clearance means, and what the research says

The BioMat Pro and BioMat Mini are FDA 510(k) cleared, Class II, under K072534; both are the 7000MX model. Cleared means the device itself went through the FDA's 510(k) review, a different status from a facility being registered with the FDA. The BioMat Pro is FDA cleared for muscle relaxation and temporary relief of minor muscle and joint pain. We do not claim anything beyond its cleared uses.

Research on heat and far infrared in general is mostly small, uses different devices, and was not done on the BioMat, so we do not borrow its results. In short, the BioMat Pro is a heat device cleared for specific, temporary uses, not a treatment. It is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Specific medical advice should be obtained from a licensed health care practitioner. See our medical disclaimer.

Safety and comfort

The BioMat Pro is not for use with a pacemaker or defibrillator, with a serious heart condition, during pregnancy, or over numb areas of the body. If unsure, ask a licensed health care practitioner first. The manual lists sleeping on the mat among its safety precautions, so use it for timed sessions, not overnight. EMF shielding is built in and tested by Intertek, an outside laboratory.

BioMat Pro, Mini, or both?

The BioMat Mini uses the same amethyst build in a portable size: 20 × 33 in, about 8 lb, with 6 lb of stone and a range of 104 to 158 °F. It suits a chair, a desk, or travel, and includes its own germanium waterproof cover ($120 value). The Pro gives you about three times the surface and three times the stone, for about two and a half times the price.

Want both? The BioMat Pro + Mini Bundle is $2,700, $300 less than buying the two separately, with both covers included ($320 combined value). Want sound and vibration instead? The BioAcoustic Pro is a separate sound and vibration mat in the same professional length, with no heat.

BioMat Pro or a PEMF combination mat?

The BioMat Pro does one thing: even, radiant heat through a heavy stone layer. Combination mats add a pulsed magnetic field (PEMF) and red light to the warmth, at a lower price.

Choose the HEALiX Revive PEMF Mat or the TheraPro Large if you want PEMF and light in the same session. Choose the BioMat Pro if heat is the point and you want the most stone, an FDA 510(k) clearance, and the longest warranty of the three. Our PEMF vs infrared mats comparison sets the two side by side, the PEMF mat buying guide explains the PEMF side, and the infrared mats collection shows our mats side by side. Who the BioMat Pro suits, and who should skip it

  • Suits you if you want a 20 to 60 minute lie-down heat session at the end of the day, with nothing to change into.
  • Suits you if you have a spot for a mat about 73 inches long and want a cleared device built to be repaired and kept.
  • Skip it if you are short on floor space or often away from home; the BioMat Mini fits a chair or a bag.
  • Skip it if you want a full sweat; an infrared sauna or sauna blanket does that job, covered in our infrared sauna guide.

Can you pay with HSA or FSA?

The BioMat Pro can qualify with a Letter of Medical Necessity, decided per order by an independent licensed provider through Truemed at checkout. Details on the HSA and FSA page.
