PEMF vs Infrared Mat: How Each Works and Which to Buy
A field you cannot feel against heat you can: mechanism, what a session is like, what the evidence supports for each, who should avoid which, and how to choose a dedicated mat or a combination.

A PEMF mat pulses a magnetic field you cannot feel; an infrared mat radiates heat you can. They look alike because both are mats you lie on for twenty minutes to an hour, and they get sold together because several products combine them. They are different tools with different evidence, different sessions, and different people they suit. This guide puts them side by side: mechanism, what a session is like, what the research supports for each, who should avoid which, and how to choose between a dedicated mat and a combination.
How each mat works
PEMF. Wire coils in the mat carry a current that switches on and off at a set frequency, producing a pulsing magnetic field. Because the field changes, it induces small electrical currents in tissue. Nothing touches the skin electrically, and at home intensities, a few to a few hundred microtesla, there is no sensation. The full mechanism and its limits are in the PEMF therapy guide.
Infrared. A heating layer warms a layer of crushed mineral, usually amethyst and tourmaline, which emits far infrared in the 5 to 13 micron range. Your body absorbs it as gentle, even warmth at a surface temperature of roughly 77 to 158 degrees Fahrenheit. It is radiant heat, closer to sun on skin than to an electric blanket, covered in infrared mats explained.
What a session is like
| PEMF mat | Infrared mat | |
|---|---|---|
| What you feel | Usually nothing | Steady, penetrating warmth |
| Session length | 10 to 30 minutes, longer for sleep programs | 30 to 60 minutes, longer at low settings |
| Settings | Frequency, intensity, waveform, program | Temperature and timer |
| Time of day | Any; programs sorted by evening and day | Any; most people use it in the evening |
| Effort | None; passive | None; passive, with hydration and a towel |
| Sweat | No | Light at most; a sauna blanket is the sweat format |
What the evidence supports for each
PEMF has a long clinical history, most of it on prescription bone-healing devices at intensities home mats do not replicate. For home-style low-intensity devices, studies report changes in local blood flow and reduced reported soreness after training, and some report subjective relaxation; samples are small and protocols vary. Where it stands: a real mechanism with a narrower home evidence base than the marketing implies.
Infrared heat is well studied as local heat: it raises tissue temperature, increases local blood flow, and relaxes muscle, the effects a warm compress produces, delivered over the whole body for a long session. The BioMat Pro and BioMat Mini are FDA 510(k) cleared Class II devices whose label covers heating-pad type uses, temporary relief of minor muscle and joint pain and stiffness, muscle relaxation, and a temporary increase in local circulation. Cleared is a specific status, explained in what FDA clearance means, and it covers those label uses, nothing broader.
Neither treats a condition, and nothing on this site is sold for that purpose. If a choice has to be made on evidence alone, heat has the older and plainer case; PEMF has the more interesting one.
Who should avoid which
- PEMF: anyone with a pacemaker, defibrillator, insulin pump, or other implanted electronic device should not use it, without exception. Pregnant women and anyone managing a serious condition should ask their clinician first.
- Infrared: anyone pregnant, managing a heart condition, or with reduced sensation to heat should ask first, and nobody should sleep on a high setting.
- Combination mats carry both lists. Kove does not provide medical advice; see the medical disclaimer.
Dedicated or combination
This is the real decision. A dedicated PEMF system, a controller plus a mat with coils and nothing else, gives the finest control over frequency, intensity, and waveform, and applicators that can be added later. A dedicated infrared mat gives the heaviest crystal layer and, in the BioMat's case, cleared-device status. A combination mat gives you both mechanisms in a single surface, with less control over each: the HEALiX Revive runs PEMF at 1 to 50 Hz and 300 microtesla alongside far infrared heat and 660 nm red light; the TheraPro pads run 9 PEMF programs with full-spectrum infrared, red light, and TENS.
The useful sorting question is which one will get you onto the mat. Warmth is the thing people feel and come back for, which is why combination mats are the most-used mats we sell. If you want to run specific PEMF programs, or you already own heat, buy dedicated. If you want one purchase and one evening habit, buy the combination.

Which mat to buy
- "I want warmth and an evening habit, one purchase": HEALiX Revive, full size or Mini.
- "I want the mat with the most crystal and a cleared-device label": BioMat Pro.
- "I want to run PEMF programs with real control": Vasindux Pro or Pro+.
- "I want something that folds and travels, with heat and PEMF": a TheraPro pad.
- "I already own a sauna blanket": a dedicated PEMF system; you have the heat.
- "I have a pacemaker": infrared only, and ask your clinician first.
How to compare PEMF mats on their own terms, units included, is in the PEMF mat buying guide; the frequency menus are decoded in PEMF frequencies explained; and both categories are among those that can qualify for HSA and FSA payment with a Letter of Medical Necessity through Truemed at checkout, details on the HSA and FSA page.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a PEMF mat and an infrared mat?
A PEMF mat pulses a magnetic field you cannot feel; an infrared mat radiates far infrared heat you can. Different mechanisms, different evidence, same lying-down posture, which is why combination mats exist.
Which is better, PEMF or infrared?
Neither is better; they do different jobs. Infrared heat has the plainer evidence as local heat; PEMF has a clinical history mostly from prescription devices and a narrower home evidence base. Most people choose by what they will use, which usually means the one they can feel.
Can you use PEMF and infrared at the same time?
Yes; combination mats do exactly that. The two do not interfere. The trade is less control over each than a dedicated device offers.
Is a combination mat as good as a dedicated one?
For the heat, close to it; for PEMF, a dedicated system offers finer frequency, intensity, and waveform control and add-on applicators. Buy the combination for the habit, the dedicated system for the control.
Does an infrared mat have EMF?
Look for published EMF shielding: the BioMats carry Intertek-tested EMF shielding and the HEALiX Revive uses a zero-EMF heating layer with Faraday shielding. On a combination mat, the only field present should be the PEMF it pulses on purpose.
Who should not use a PEMF mat?
Anyone with a pacemaker, defibrillator, or other implanted electronic device should not use a PEMF mat. Pregnant women and people managing serious conditions should ask their clinician first.
How long is a session on each?
PEMF programs run 10 to 30 minutes; an infrared mat session runs 30 to 60 minutes or longer at low heat. On a combination mat the heat sets the session and the PEMF program runs within it.
Can I pay with HSA or FSA?
Both PEMF and infrared mats are among the categories that can qualify with a Letter of Medical Necessity, decided per order by an independent licensed provider through Truemed at checkout.
PEMF or infrared mat, in brief
Field versus heat. PEMF is unfelt and precise; infrared is warm and simple. Heat has the plainer evidence, PEMF the more interesting one, and neither treats anything. Choose the combination mat for the habit, a dedicated mat for the control, and read the contraindication list for whichever you pick.
